Dear Air Cargo Professional,

I flew to Shanghai this month to attend the annual World Cargo Symposium(WCS) organized by IATA, and joined over 1,000 delegates from all over the world in three days of in depth discussions about all the major issues confronting the air cargo industry. There is no doubt that the WCS is the leading event in the $63 billion air cargo industry which finally showed over 4% growth last year. It is becoming increasingly clear that as this business matures, it is being re-engineered as a “specialized” industry with unique product and service verticals.

A whole new breed of players is emerging to cater to these special product categories and market niches. Even the leading cargo gateways like Schiphol and Brussels have staffed themselves with dedicated cargo management teams, and are getting their vendors validated and certified to cash in on the new wave of specialized air cargo products such as pharmaceuticals.

IATA continues to provide a leadership role in initiatives to create and foster global standards in cargo transportation and handling. One new initiative for the pharma sector from IATA is CEIV, (Center of Excellence for Independent Validators)which provides Pharma Certification & Validation/Training in Pharmaceutical Logistics & Handling. Brussels Airport has been an early adopter and has already seen an increase in its pharma shipments.

The message from the IATA World Cargo Symposium is very clear. If you want to succeed in the new specialized air cargo era, you must continuously train and equip yourself with new knowledge and skills. The days of “general cargo”, where one solution fits all, are over.
We hope to see you at the CNS Partnership Conference in Orlando, Florida, from April 19-21. This promises to be another great event, though a smaller version of the WCS, and more America centric. Nevertheless, it should be another unique learning and networking opportunity.

I hope to see you at CNS

Best Regards
